If you’re in the market for a custom door knocker then you should know how to go about sopping for one.  Let’s face it, if you’re looking for a custom door knocker odds are you are used to having things your way and there is no better way to add some unique curb appeal to your home than adding a custom door knocker.

Over the course of many years have seen all kinds of custom door knockers.  From devil door knockers to hanging balls…you name it, I have seen it.  The best place to look for custom door knockers is at home trade shows.  Probably 70% of the custom made stuff I have seen has been at these shows.  Not that they were selling them, but the vendors were merely just showing what they have made for people and also showing their work.  Typically when a place makes a unique piece for a customer they will ask the customer if they can make one for a display piece.

As for places to buy custom door knockers? Really the only place where you might be able have these made from scratch will be a metal fabricating shop or machine shop.  I would only go this route if you’re really wanting to have a one-off door knocker.  This may be a bit extreme, but again, I have seen some pretty cool custom door knockers.  Not to mention the conversational value you will have with these unique pieces.  When approaching your local machine shop about making you a custom door knocker be sure to know exactly what you want.  No matter how bad of an artist you are…try drawing something out that will give the fabricator an idea of what you’re looking for.  Depending on their skill level, they may be able to just take an idea and run with it.  But, as with anything there are no guarantees that it will come up exactly as planned.  You will absorb the cost no matter what, but the bright side is…it will be special to you and your family.  There truly is no such thing as an ugly door knocker anyways.

There are also some places online that will custom make door knockers for you. I have also seen many unique door knockers on eBay that would be considered custom.  But, just be warned that you will need to be prepared to spend some money when having one fabricated for you. Take into consideration the man hours that will be put into shaping and molding a door knocker. Not to mention the material that will be needed. The material of choice more likely will be iron. I have also seen some custom door knockers that incorporate wood accents in the pieces.  Next time I see one…I will post it.

Another nice option is to have a door knocker viewer integrated with the custom door knocker.  This is simply done by having a standard peephole mounted into the door knocker.  But, keep in mind that stalling a door viewer door knocker can be a bit more difficult die to the hole needed to view the guest.  I have included a installation page with a video that will get you going into the right direction.
