Invented around the seventeenth century the brass door knocker is a great piece of American history and although not as popular, still may be the single most aesthetically pleasing piece of door hardware.

Originally most used during the Renaissance age, but was also utilized during the Romanesque and Gothic time periods. The standard brass door knocker will consist of the actual striking element also known as the striker. The striker will typically be U shaped or in the shape of a ring. The second element of a brass door knocker is the strike plate which the sound is reverberated though.  The meeting of the two metals with force will cause the “Knock”.

Door knockers come in many shapes and sizes.  They are also made from all kinds of materials such as iron, metal, acrylic and even gold!  Although the most popular finish is brass, there are several other types of door knockers such as:

  • Copper door knocker
  • Iron door knocker
  • Brass restoration hardware
  • Bronze door knocker
  • Brass lion door knocker

As mentioned on a previous page, my personal favorite is the brass lion door knocker.  I can’t emphasize enough that you when purchasing a brass door knocker you match the size of the knocker to your door. Also don’t just be limited to old style door knockers.  You can purchase team logoed door knockers, Disney themed door knockers; whatever you’re interested in…they will have a style for you.

One brass knocker that I would recommend and I think would look stunning on a front door is the Baldwin model number 0106.003 French Door Knocker.  Yes, they even make pieces for French doors.  Measuring only 7 1/2″H x 2 1/2″W, it should fit on any size door. Not to mention that it’s made by Baldwin who is very well known for their household hardware.  If you buy Baldwin…you’re buying quality.  This brass door knocker is relatively cheap costing only $56.45.  Size and detail will be the driving factor for prices on a brass door knocker. As always, shopping around and finding those specials will ensure the best price.

Not too many now days have these wonderful pieces hanging on their front doors.  With wireless doorbells and door chimes, the need for brass door knockers has diminished. I absolutely adore door knockers and although I truly enjoy the digital age…I love answering the door to a knock. There is something to be said about hearing a sound that our great — great ancestors may have heard on a daily basis.  I can tell you this much…I know they didn’t hear “Ding Dong”!
